Hey guys,
I've had quite a few questions regarding the New Gods in the last few days, and it made me realise that I probably didn't make some things as clear as I should have. I've modified that section in the rules and FAQ now, so hopefully it's a little clearer now.
Here's basically what you need to know about New Gods:
New Gods are essentially the physical embodiments of all the things Americans "worship" or put their faith in now. They tend to be the products of new innovations (like technology), new fads and modern consumer culture. They do not embody any of the sweeping concepts ruled over by the old gods - for example, music or wealth - but could well embody modern expressions of those things, like rock 'n roll or the music industry in the case of music; or capitalism, Wall Street or banking in the case of wealth.
Their rise to godhood is often linked to commericalisation or popularisation. So, while tobacco smoking existed long before the European settlement of the Americas, it was only with their arrival and the subsequent rise of the tobacco trade (which delivered him worshippers in the form of consumers and human sacrifice in all the slaves forced to work on tobacco plantations) that Big Tobacco became a corporeal being.
If you've got any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
As far as allowing mortals as playable characters, most people seem to be fine with it and/or feel they would make an interesting addition so I'm opening up humans to application. Using mortals as recurring NPCs, like Hades' wife and son, is also fine. |
