| New Gods and Mortals |

Hey guys,
I've had quite a few questions regarding the New Gods in the last few days, and it made me realise that I probably didn't make some things as clear as I should have. I've modified that section in the rules and FAQ now, so hopefully it's a little clearer now.
Here's basically what you need to know about New Gods:
New Gods are essentially the physical embodiments of all the things Americans "worship" or put their faith in now. They tend to be the products of new innovations (like technology), new fads and modern consumer culture. They do not embody any of the sweeping concepts ruled over by the old gods - for example, music or wealth - but could well embody modern expressions of those things, like rock 'n roll or the music industry in the case of music; or capitalism, Wall Street or banking in the case of wealth.
Their rise to godhood is often linked to commericalisation or popularisation. So, while tobacco smoking existed long before the European settlement of the Americas, it was only with their arrival and the subsequent rise of the tobacco trade (which delivered him worshippers in the form of consumers and human sacrifice in all the slaves forced to work on tobacco plantations) that Big Tobacco became a corporeal being.
If you've got any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
As far as allowing mortals as playable characters, most people seem to be fine with it and/or feel they would make an interesting addition so I'm opening up humans to application. Using mortals as recurring NPCs, like Hades' wife and son, is also fine. |

Hey guys, there seemed to be a little confusion on the movements of the gods, so here's a quick clarification.
Gods actually can't travel from country to country as they like. Because they're essentially ideas, they must go wherever their worshippers go. So, for instance, Ishtar arrived in 776 BC in the minds of some Babylonian traders, whose boats were swept off course in a fierce storm and who prayed to her for a safe arrival; while Blodeuwedd travelled with a group of homesick Welsh settlers during the early 1700s, who passed the long nights aboard the ship by telling one another tales of their homeland. (It's not necessary to be that specific, those are just a couple of examples.) We've got a timeline here of when, for the purposes of the game, different cultures might have reached America, but as long as the time of your god's arrival is plausible you don't have to be tied to that - the pantheons probably didn't arrive in one boatload, after all.
Once the god has been brought to America and the idea takes root, they can't leave, they can only adapt. There are gods in other countries - for instance, the Norse travelled to America via Iceland, so it's quite possible they brought, say, Thor to both countries and that he is still roaming around both. However, while they are the same god, the same idea, they are completely separate incarnations and it would be quite common for them to have no contact at all with one another. Each might not even be aware the other exists.
Does that make sense to everyone? |

Please note that this is in no way intended to be historically accurate. Some of it is based on solid fact (like the Vikings' expeditions), but a lot of the earlier stuff is taken from speculation (like the Australian Aborigines' presence) or totally unsubstantiated claims (like the Ancient Egyptians and the fifth century Chinese voyage). It's just being used here to help you figure out when your gods might have arrived in America.
